After attending a Vegan BBQ recently I was impressed with the food dished up. Not only was it healthy but extremely tasty!

Vegans have a diet based on plants. They avoid all animal foods (such as meat, fish and shellfish) dairy, eggs and usually honey. They will also avoid all animal-derived products and any products that have been tested on animals.

It isn’t about being “perfect” but it’s about making a positive change to the way you live.

Indeed, often, when hosting a Barbecue supplying food for a Vegan friend can be daunting. We are so conditioned to think of a BBQ as a meat-based activity and only supply a few veggie options as a side.

Black Bean Burgers with Chipotle “Mayo”

Perfect for a Vegan BBQ Ingredients

  • 1 Can ( 400g) of Black Beans rinsed and drain well
  • 1 Medium Onion finely chopped
  • 100g cooked brown rice
  • 1 tsp fennelseeds crushed
  • ½ tsp garlic salt
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 25 grams of breadcrumbs
  • 1 Tablespoon Flat-leaf Parsley finely chopped

Chipotle “Mayo”

  • 100gm silken tofu
  • 1 tsp cider vinegar
  • 1 tsp Lemon juice
  • ¼ teaspoon mustard powder
  • 1 teaspoon Chipotle paste ( if you cant get Chipotle paste at your local supermarket then you can substitute chili paste . It doesn’t give that smoky flavor that Chipotle does)

Directions

Burgers:- Combine all the burger ingredients in a blender and pulse until combined. Don’t over blend and make the mixture too mushy.

Divide it into four and make the patties.

Place on an oiled baking sheet and chill for at least 30 mins.

Chipotle Mayo:- Place all the ingredients into a small blender with a pinch of sugar and blend until very smooth . Add 2 tablespoons of Olive Oil and blend again until it looks similar to mayonnaise. Season and chill until ready for use.

Brush the burgerpatties with a little olive oil and place on the grill on high heat. Grill for 3 minutes on each side. Only flip once …it is important that a good crust forms to prevent them from breaking.

Lightly char the buns. Add a spoon of Chipotle mayo then top with the burger.

It’s up to you which other ingredients you want to add to the burger . Guacamole, lettuce and tomato look and taste amazing.

Vegan BBQ Recipes – Even a Meat Eater will Love These! Free Cooking and BBQ Magazine

The recipe is credited to Tamara Green and Sarah Grossman.

Brussel sprouts are not something you would normally expect at a Barbecue especially served direct from the grill. They are kinda like a vegetable lollipop!

Ingredients

  • 1 lb brussels sprouts, halved
  • 1/2 red onion, sliced into 1-inch squares
  • 3 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 3 Tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 Tbsp dijon mustard
  • 1/4 tsp sea salt

Toppings

A drizzle of maple syrup

A squeeze of lemon juice

Chopped fresh parsley

Directions

  1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil, toss in the brussels sprouts for 1 minute until tender. Remove them, rinse under cold water and pat dry with a towel.
  2. Place the brussels sprouts in a bowl with red onion and the rest of the ingredients, toss so the veggies are well coated in the marinade.
  3. Arrange the sprouts onto the skewers with red onion in between them – there should be about 4 brussels sprouts per skewer. If using wooden skewers, soak them first.
  4. Pour any remaining marinade left in the bowl over the skewers.
  5. Place the skewers onto your BBQ or grill that’s set to medium heat. Cover and grill for about 5 minutes per side, until a nicely browned.
  6. Brush with a little extra maple syrup, a squeeze of lemon juice, fresh parsley and enjoy.

Grilled BBQ Avocado with a lime dressing

Vegan BBQ Recipes – Even a Meat Eater will Love These! Free Cooking and BBQ Magazine

Many people only ever consider eating Avocado cold. It is delicious hot as well. Grilling adds an extra layer of smoke to the Avocado and makes it even creamier.

Perfect for Vegans.

Cut avocado in half and remove the stone. Brush with a little virgin olive oil and squeeze lime juice over the halved avocado. Season with a little salt and ground black pepper.

Place them cut side down on the grill over medium heat. Cook for about 4 minutes or until warm and char marks appear.

Use a spatula to remove the avocados from the grill.

Desserts on the BBQ – Suitable for Vegans and all your Guests

One of the simplest ways to dish up a sweet delicious dessert of your BBQ is to grill fruit and then baste with maple syrup. Think Pineapple wedges, peaches, apple halves …

Another neat trick is to wash strawberries and hull. Push a sprig of rosemary through the center. Place these on the grill for about 5 mins turning once. The rosemary will infuse into the strawberries. Remove the sprig before serving.

Try these vegan ideas at your next BBQ and encourage your friends and family into a healthier lifestyle.

About the Author:

Hi, I am a writer based outside Cape Town in South Africa. I come from a Barbecue obsessed family. With the great weather we have in Cape Town ( most of the year) we enjoy Cooking Outside in our Backyard as often as possible. South African's love to "Braai" anything! The trick to continuing to enjoy Barbecuing is loving the old favorites but experimenting with new foods and methods often.
