Sports Drinks – Pros and Cons

Sports Drinks – Pros and Cons

Sports drinks are flavoured beverages that contain carbohydrates (usually sugar) and minerals such as sodium and potassium. Those minerals are generally referred to as electrolytes. And sports drinks are designed to recharge the electrolytes that were lost while sweating.
For professional athletes and people that exercise on a daily basis, this is a perfect drink.

  • Through a lot of exercising your body becomes drained in nutrients, such as potassium and magnesium. Both of these nutrients help prevent muscle cramping. The risk of injury is higher if you’re low on electrolytes.
One major advantage that sports drinks have over water is the fact that they’re full of sodium, potassium and other electrolytes.
  • A lot of sports drinks contain high amounts of protein as well.
  • They’re easy to digest which is some cases a better choice than food. Fluids that contain vitamins and minerals help the body feel full and digest the essential elements that it needs to perform.

  • Sports drinks can contain 150 calories which are equivalent to 10 teaspoons of sugar. For people that are trying to lose weight, this is the same as eating extra food.
  • Because of the high sugar content, added artificial flavouring and colouring, sports drinks can cause tooth decay.
  • If used by kids it can come to too much energy and obesity.
  • An approximate price per sports drink is 1.50-3.00$ at a grocery store. And if you drink it often it can add up to a much bigger bill. Not just that it can turn out to be pricey but it could also be harmful to you.
  • Sports drinks without sugar.

There are even worse things than sugar itself. Have you ever wondered what is the substitute for sugar in sugar-free sports drinks?  These drinks contain artificial sweeteners, which are synthetic sugar substitutes.  Even though these artificial sweeteners have many pros, we ran into many that are everything but good for you. People that start using sugar-free drinks do it either to lose weight or to prevent diabetes and other diseases.

Research has ruled out cancer for the most part. Besides cancer, there are other concerns that one may have when consuming artificial sweetener. In one study, daily consumption of sugar-free drinks was connected with an increased risk for a metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. Aren’t these some of the reasons that people start using artificial sweeteners in the first place? It seems obvious now that they don’t help at all with preventing these diseases, they just make it worse for our health.

Aspartame is one of the most dangerous artificial sweeteners and most people aren’t aware of the full extent of the harm that it can cause.  This artificial sweetener can cause seizures, rashes, problems with your vision and/or hearing, muscle spasms, tachycardia and many more serious health problems. If you have a chronic illness you should definitely avoid using aspartame because it could worsen or trigger your illness. Meaning people that have epilepsy, diabetes,  Parkinson’s disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, Alzheimer’s, lymphoma and other serious illnesses would be better off using normal sugar. In other cases, aspartame was also known to cause death.

Saccharin may make you addicted. Animal studies have shown that when given a choice between cocaine and saccharin most will choose saccharin. Other than addiction, saccharin was known for causing cancer and other disorder.

People that use artificial sweeteners over sugar may become more obese because they would stop connecting sweetness to calorie intake. They can also become less healthy because artificial sweeteners change the way we taste the food. Which means that food such as vegetables and fruits won’t be as tasty anymore.

Even though these drinks have their pros and cons, they’re made for professional athletes. We suggest you think twice before using artificial sweeteners since they have been known for causing very serious health problems. If you started using them because you wanted to lose weight and prevent health problems then it would be better to return to normal sugar and to lower the amount of sugar that you take.
