Over the past few years, the market for grills has gained traction at an incredible pace. These days you’ll need more than a new Weber Spirit to impress your friends.

If you want to stand out among the growing crowd of barbecue enthusiasts, you’ll need to pickup a smoker. But with so many types of smokers, which one is right for you?  outdoor cooking, outdoor grilling, selecting a grill, selecting a smoker, learn to barbecue, bbq, barbeque, cooking, food, Barbecue Guide, Barbecue Recipes, Free Cooking and BBQ Magazine

Here are the pros and cons of the four most popular types of smokers.

Charcoal Smoker

Charcoal smokers are the most popular choice. With a standard charcoal smoker like the Weber Rocky Mountain, you gain great control over the flavor of your meat. If you are interested in simplicity, flavor, and balance, then a charcoal grill may be the best for you. They do, however, require plenty of attention during smoking.

Gas Smoker

Gas powered smokers require a lot less attention than charcoal or wood, but they are usually much more expensive. Sooner or later, your wallet will also notice the cost of replacing your propane tanks. However, they strike a balance in flavor between charcoal and electric. They offer more flavor than an electric smoker, but need slightly more attention.

Electric Smoker

Electric smokers are usually the most expensive, and the biggest in size. Many claim they offer only limited flavor, but their main perk is obvious: they require almost no attention at all. If you want to pop your meat in the smoker and come back only when it’s time to eat, an electric smoker will be the best bet.

Wood Smoker

Wood smokers are the simplest and cheapest of all, and require constant attention. It can be difficult to get all pieces of wood to burn evenly. As a result, you will be tending to your wood throughout the smoking process. The good news is the great control you have over your meat’s flavor. There is no other variety of smoker which offers this type of flavor.
